For over 20 years the readers of EDN Magazine (link) have annually honored the top innovations and innovators in a variety of technical categories. Unlike many industry awards, which are chosen by a panels of experts, the EDN Innovation awards are voted on by the engineers and engineering managers on the front line of the business. Winning their approval means just a little bit more.
This year Microchip won the Innovation Award in the category of Human-Machine Interface Technology for the mTouch metal-over-capacitive-touch-sensing technology.
As the preferred input method for consumers, touch screens and panels are everywhere. mTouch technology is significant because it provides a reliable, highly-responsive alternative to mechanical switches - it’s a sensor, not a switch - and can be incorporated into applications and environments in which traditional interfaces won’t work. It’s waterproof, functions in electrically noisy or radiated environments, and works even if the user is wearing gloves.
And though it stands up to harsh environments, mTouch also enables sleek, clean, aesthetically pleasing interfaces for a variety of consumer, industrial, and medical applications.
It costs less and uses less power than currently available solutions, as well.
